Hahakigami, which translates as broom spirits, are a type of yokai that occur once a broom has reached a very old age and is transformed into (or possesed by) a spirit, known as tsukumogami. Because brooms were used in ritual purifications, they can become powerful magical charms.

Hahakigami can be seen sweeping leaves on windy days with no human help. As magical charms they can be used to sweep things out as needed, such as aiding the smooth birth of babies, or getting rid of unwanted house guests.
